Our own James DeRuvo messaged me earlier about a RED announcement on Thursday July 6 at 9 am Pacific, and it’s “a new product category,” according to Jim Jannard, who posted it over on REDUSER (and a screenshot posted by Jarred Land). What could RED be planning next week?

Here’s the post from Jannard (emphasis mine):

July 6th. 9am PST. Right here.

You need to be online.

You need to tell everyone you know to be online.

Have your credit card ready.

This is a new product category. It does not impact your RED camera.

Jim”

RedShark News recalls this quote from Jannard back in May 2016:

“There is a new project that I am so excited about that I can hardly contain myself. Jarred is obviously involved… my best friend and partner in crime. 🙂

“This new project is the biggest one I have ever worked on. I have worked on a few… “

The big question is what can it be? Since it’s a new product category, and if it’s what Jannard said last year “is the biggest one” he’s ever worked on, and won’t impact current RED cameras, it’s really a mystery. My first guess is a giant UHD production monitor, with resolutions that would be unheard of even today, which is something they teased at NAB 2008, when they first talked about the EPIC and SCARLET cameras. A custom computer?

What do you think it could be? Drop your thoughts in the comments below. Regardless, I’ll be tuned into RED.com and REDUSER.net on Thursday July 6th at 9 am Pacific!

Could it be this? We’ll find out soon enough.
