A Geek’s Reaction to the Alien: Covenant Trailer

Alien and Aliens are two of the very best examples of science fiction horror. Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection were either pale imitators, or screwed up due to studio interference. The Alien vs. Predator series pretty much took two beloved franchises and dragged them through the bad b-movie dirt (despite being based on a great comic book).

Prometheus was supposed to be Ridley Scott’s triumphant return to the Alien series in an effort to revitalize it, but that turned out to be a mess as well. Albeit, not as bad as the vs. franchise or Alien: Resurrection, but still nowhere near the original.

Fortunately, he’s getting another chance at righting this ship with Alien: Covenant, and a brand new trailer has dropped. You can watch that here:

This is much more Alien than it is Prometheus, and that has me really excited. Sure, you can ask what makes this film any different than any other Alien movie, since it features the classic egg-to-facehugger-to-chestburster (or back burster, in this case), to a full on Xenomorph plot. But I have faith that Scott not only learned his lessons from Prometheus, but is still keen on exploring the creation of the alien creature and the Engineers in Alien: Covenant.

The reason I think that, is Alien: Covenant seems to be a merging of tones from both those movies. The feel of the planet, which is supposed to be the Engineers’ homeworld, reminds me a lot of LV-223 from Prometheus, but the action and fright is pure Alien.

It still leaves us with the big question about what happened to Elizabeth Shaw and David from Prometheus. We should get some kind of answer, and I suspect David is the man in the hood at the 1:56 mark. We also know that Scott wants to make another Alien prequel, so I doubt we’ll get to LV-426 in this film (the setting of Alien and Aliens, though renamed Acheron after terraforming), but I suspect that he will bring us full circle to the original film, eventually.

Alien: Covenant will premiere in theaters on May 19, 2017. Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

The path to paradise begins in hell. Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.
