A Geek’s Reaction to the First Thor: Ragnarok Trailer

The Thor films have been considered the weaker franchise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Everyone thinks that Chris Hemsworth is perfectly cast as the character, but the solo films have been underwhelming — despite having one of the best villains in Tom Hiddleston’s Loki.

That is expected to change in Thor: Ragnarok, his third solo outing, and Marvel has just released the first trailer. Take a look!

This is what I think of as a great trailer! It’s fun, kinetic, sets huge stakes, and isn’t super cryptic, but also doesn’t reveal too much. Mostly, it feels fun, which is one of the things that the Thor movies aren’t especially known for. And the previous film felt like it didn’t have much at stake.

Cate Blanchett in anything always makes me excited, so she looks fantastic here — especially in that headdress. Loki has been a great villain, but Blanchett as Hela looks like she can take on all of Asgard, and going by the trailer, she absolutely can.

One of the great things I can tell from this trailer is most of the footage comes from what I would guess is the first half of the film. The only time we see Thor with his new haircut is right at the end, when he faces the Hulk. I doubt they’d put off that meeting until the end of the movie, so my best guess is it happens halfway in. We don’t see any footage of Hemsworth with his haircut before the colosseum reveal, which means they’re keeping a lot from us.

And no review can be complete without mentioning the moment Thor lays eyes on Hulk. I don’t think I’ve ever seen his character quite as happy, and I almost fell off my chair laughing when he said, “We know each other, he’s a friend from work!” Nothing really gives you as good of an idea as what a different tone director Taika Waititi brings to the film like that line.

Thor: Ragnarok opens November 3, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Karl Urban, Ray Stevenson, and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
