Warner Bros. has just unwrapped a new trailer for Wonder Woman, which is the next film in the studio’s DC Extended Universe series of movies that kicked off with Man of Steel. This will be the first film that either DC or Marvel Studios will release with a female protagonist, so there is more riding on this film than most superhero movies.
This new trailer comes complete with loads of new footage and hints to possible spoilers in the film. We’ll warn you before we discuss those but you can check out the trailer here:
Let me be blunt, no DCEU film so far has been critically liked. According to Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences are more likely to enjoy the films, there still isn’t a consensus by them as to whether they’re any good. These films also never go unscathed before they come out (like Suicide Squad, as one example), and Wonder Woman is no stranger to that, having been called a mess a few times.
I know that trailers are no indication as to whether a movie is any good (and we’ve been fooled before… looking at you, Suicide Squad), but I haven’t seen anything I haven’t liked in any of these. I want DC’s universe to succeed, and they have access to some great characters. So it could be my own bias playing here, but I think Wonder Woman will be the first film to start righting Warners’ DCEU ship. The look of this film is unique, and it hints at some compelling drama without losing sight of adding in some fun, which has, so far, been lacking in the Zack Snyder-directed films.
There’s also a brand new poster for Wonder Woman, which you can see below. Following that there will be huge possible spoilers for the film.
Huge potential spoilers for Wonder Woman beyond this point!
Now we get to the possible “spilled beans” found in this trailer. It seems Diana’s origins won’t be the classic “she was molded out of clay” origin. Producer Charles Roven has commented on it while talking with ComicBook.com. Here’s what he said:
“For Wonder Woman, what was really intriguing to us was the mythology of her past and attempting to blend both the canon from the past with the New 52 and really come up with a compelling story for Diana and her hero’s journey.”
For those of you who don’t know, in the New 52 reboot Wonder Woman’s origin was changed from having no father to being a demi-god with Zeus as her dad. That origin does play better in live-action but there’s another problem in that Zeus has been dead in this film for a very long time after being killed by Ares. My best guess is that Diana will be told the clay story but that will be a lie. However, I doubt that Zeus is her father leaving only one possible contender: Ares. I suspect we will totally get an Empire Strikes Back moment in this film, where Diana is forced to confront her father.
Wonder Woman will premiere in theaters on June 2, 2017.
