When Edgar Wright vacated the Ant-Man director’s chair, Marvel was scrambling to find someone to take his place. The front runner for the chair was Anchorman writer/director Adam McKay, but he was unavailable to take on the film. Ant-Man soon ended up in the hands of Peyton Reed, who is currently shooting the film, but not before McKay reworked the screenplay for Marvel.
He recently spoke about the rewrite he did with Paul Rudd, who is playing the titular character, and it seems McKay had such a positive experience that despite not getting the Ant-Man chair, he could go on to direct something else for the studio. Speaking with Crave Online, he talked about working on the Ant-Man script for Marvel:
I just did a big rewrite on Ant-Man with Paul Rudd, and had such a great time working with them, that we’re kicking around ideas. But yeah, maybe I would take on one of the characters, so we haven’t locked in anything, but discussions are definitely going on.
Thus far, all of McKay’s films have been comedies, so it will be an interesting development for him to deviate into comic book films. Not that the Marvel films are serious films, they usually include hilarious moments and snappy dialogue, but they also feature copious amounts of drama and action.
This isn’t the first time comedy directors have been brought on board a Marvel property, only to produce a tight suspenseful film. Joe and Anthony Russo were directors for the TV show Community, and the feature film You, Me and Dupree, only to do a bang up job with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They’re even rumored to take over the directors chair(s) for The Avengers 3 and 4, if Joss Whedon decides to move on.
What Could McKay Direct?
If McKay is in active talks with Marvel, they must be thinking about specific projects. Thor 3 is still in development, and has no director attached, but I can’t see Marvel going with him on that film. They would definitely want to use his screenwriting muscle on the project, as well.
My hunch is that they will bring him in onto a new property, and I bet it’s the long-rumored Captain Marvel. This seems to be the best fit, since Carol Danvers’ powers come from being fused with Kree physiology, which was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy. The Guardians film is rumored to set up the Marvel Cosmic Universe, which James Gunn has done a marvelous (pun!) job creating, and with the humor in that film, McKay seems to be a natural fit.
