Alien 5 Probably Not Happening

One of the most exciting things to happen online recenlty was the artwork director Neil Blomkamp released for a proposed Alien 5 via his Instagram back in early 2015. The District 9 director had it commissioned for an idea that would ignore Alien 3 and Alien: Ressurection, and rather take place after James Cameron’s Aliens.

Those paintings got the fans who have yearned for a proper follow-up to Cameron’s 1986 film excited. 20th Century Fox responded well to them, too, and Alien 5 was put into development. Unfortunately, the original Alien director Ridley Scott — who is currently putting the finishing touches on the Prometheus sequel Alien: Covenant — put pressure on Fox to put Blomkamp’s proposed sequel on hiatus.

Up until now it seemed that the plan was to make Scott’s film first, followed by Alien 5, but it is starting to look like that is not going to happen. A fan asked Blomkamp what the odds are for his film to go into production, and here was the conversation exchange.

Aliens Neill BlomkampEven though the chances are slim, it doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t happening although it doesn’t look good. I have mixed feelings about Fox cancelling Alien 5, as I would like to have a proper sequel to Cameron’s Aliens, and the artwork did look exciting. However, both of Blomkamp’s last two films, Elysium and Chappie, weren’t exactly great either, so there is a question of whether he would be able to create a worthy sequel to the film.

I also have to wonder what the point of creating a sequel to Aliens would be. In his artwork, it seemed like the film would be digging deeper into where the Xenomorphs came from, and more about the Space Jockey’s starship. Both of those topics are being explored in the prequels Scott is directing, so it could be that the director felt like a proposed Alien 5 film would be stepping on his toes.

Having said all of that, I really would have loved to see Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn reprise their roles as Ripley and Hicks along with an adult Newt.
