Aquaman has officially begun shooting and so we’re starting to get some first looks at the upcoming film. We’ve already gotten our first look at Jason Momoa as the titular character two years ago for his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while Amber Heard’s first look as Mera showed up for her cameo in Justice League.
That first official image of Mera in costume was taken by director Zack Snyder, and features the same subdued color palette of his previous DC Extended Universe films. However, Aquaman director James Wan and actress Amber Heard have posted new images of the character on Twitter, which you can see below:
The very first thing I can’t help but notice is just how colorful this costume is. In contrast to the Justice League picture, this image pops off the page. It’s almost certain the costume won’t look like this on the big screen, as the film will go through some color processing, but I suspect Wan is planning a more colorful film than Snyder.
For some reason, I’m strangely curious about the texture detail with the costumes. Green and gold remain the color palette for these costumes, but Heard’s costume features much less busy detail and is sleeker than the more armor looking costume from Justice League. The triangle texture (which was grafted from Momoa’s actual shark-tooth family crest forearm tattoo) has been replaced with a hexagon pattern. I wonder if this will be adapted to all the Atlantean costumes.
Meanwhile, a few new images and videos from the set have cropped up, as well. You can check out an image from Instagram here, along with a video. Gold Coast Bulletin also has a series of spy pictures and there is a tweeted video which you can watch below:

All of these images seem to be taken from the same Australian set, which features a tavern called the Sunken Galleon and Amnesty Bay Fish Co-Op. Amnesty Bay refers to Aquaman’s home town, and while Jason Momoa has been seen on set, so has actor Otis Dhanji, who plays a younger version of the character. From the sound of it, we’ll see his hometown in both flashbacks and present day.
Aquaman will premiere in theaters on December 21, 2018. Here is the synopsis for the film:
Aquaman is the King of the Seven Seas. This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.
