I love the Evil Dead movies, they happen to be one of my favorite B-movie indulgences, which no other franchise has quite been able to duplicate. Think of it this way, it’s one of the only horror franchise where the good guy is far more popular than the monsters in the film.
Even though they tried to go down the remake route for the film series, which did pretty well at the box office, I’m glad we’re getting back to the original continuity with Starz’s upcoming 10-episode series, Ash Vs. Evil Dead. We’ll finally get what every deadite fan has been waiting for: Bruce Campbell to reprise his role as Ash Williams.
This time, he’s not alone, and has 2 sidekick screwballs joining him for the ride. Starz has officially announced the casting of the actors who will play the characters in a press release: Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo.
Pablo Simon Bolivar is an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick—a Sancho Panza to Ash’s Don Quixote. Pablo believes in Ash’s heroism, even if Ash himself doesn’t. Kelly Maxwell is a moody wild child trying to outrun her past. Reluctantly dragged into the fight against evil with Ash and Pablo, Kelly finds a different kind of family with her fellow Deadite slayers.
These characters sound far more integral to the plot than Sheila, Arthur, Bobby Joe, Jake, or even Linda have been in the previous films. In some ways, the new series is reminding me of when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was reworked for television, and they added Willow and Xander as sidekicks for the main character.
Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons–personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its ‘Evil’ grip.
