Atomos Announces Shogun 4K Raw Support For Canon C300 MK II

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

Well that didn’t take long. The ink is barely drive on Canon’s announcement of the Cinema EOS C300 MK II 4K digital cinema camera, and Atomos is already poised to provide external Raw 4K support through the Atomos Shogun monitor/recorder. This promises to provide what Atomos calls the “perfect” combination of Apple ProRes/Avid and Cinema DNG capability.

“The Cinema EOS range is the workhorse of the modern production environment. The Shogun turns the C300 MkII workhorse into a race horse, recording direct from the RAW sensor output of the camera to Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHR. We can now process from sensor to record and all the way to final production covering industry standard edit codecs and RAW workflow – Shogun is a must for this camera.” – Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos

The Canon C300 MK II

Taking advantage of the C300 MK II’s twin DIGIC DV5 processors, the Atomos Shogun will take take image data and convert it to 4K resolution in Apple ProRes/Avid DNxHR or CinemaDNG. It will record 10-bit Raw output direct at up to 30 fps, or 60fps at 1080p. Other features include:

  • Record 10bit from the C300 MkII 4K Raw output direct to ProRes 4K, Avid DNxHR 4K or CinemaDNG up to 4K and UHD 30p (Available Q2 2015)
  • Record 10 bit HD 1080p up to 60fps video from the SDI or HDMI outputs
  • output 4K raw over single SDI 3G
  • Usual monitor features
  • Atomos CFast cards ready

One drawback that Atomos does admit to, however, is that the Atomos Shogun/C300 combination will not be able to record 4K over HDMI or SDI, via 3G SDI. It will, however, output 1080p60 video via HDMI or SDI. The Atomos Shogun will also record directly to both 64GB and 128GB Atomos CFast cards to keep recording costs down.
