Atomos Announces Shogun DNxHR 4K Recording for AVID

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

AVID’s fortunes got a shot in the arm at the Broadcast Video Expo this morning as Atomos announced they were adding DNxHR 4K recording support for AVID platforms to its Shogun external monitor-recorder. AVID support is one of four free new features to the Shogun, which also includes DNxHD recording, 3D LUTs, and 4KUHD to HD Down Convert.

“Shogun is already the perfect partner for the exceptional Japanese 4K cameras. With this announcement we are the only brand to have a 4K solution for Apple, Adobe and Avid workflows for video capture directly from the sensor of Sony, Panasonic, Canon and Nikon cameras. We are driving 4K content pick up for the 4K hungry world and Post Production professionals are demanding Shogun on set because we deliver a real solution. We are the only Monitor Recorder with 10-bit 4K HDMI recording, the only Monitor Recorder with Microsoft’s ExFAT recording beyond a 4GB size limit and now the only Monitor Recorder with recording options for Apple, Adobe and Avid.” – Jeromy Young CEO and co-founder of Atomos.

With Shogun sales approaching the 10,000 unit plateau since January, the 4K monitor-recorder is clearly a popular external recorder option. Atomos says that the Shogun’s popularity is due to its intuitive interface and open standard approach for faster performance, and higher image quality for end-to-end production workflow.

There’s no denying that Shogun, now that it’s finally shipping, is being well received, and looking at the image quality in the video above, it’s easy to see why, considering it’s feature set:

  • 12G SDI-HD recording
  • 4K Open HDMI connections
  • 4:2:2 10-bit recording
  • bit rates in HQ/422/LT
  • XML file markers
  • 1920×1200 SuperAtom IPS 7″ touchscreen at 325 PPI and 178 degree viewing
  • 400nit brightness and multi-frequency (48/50/60Hz) operation
  • genlock-in for synced recording and playout
  • balanced XLR Audio via Lemo breakout cable
  • mic and Phantom power

By adding DNxHR to this list, filmmaking creatives can now work inside an AVID framework with a greater range of resolutions from lightweight yet highly detailed proxies, to mastering-quality HD or 4K. Additionally, since DNxHR is backward compatible with DNxHD you can mix both types of media on the same timeline.

Recent updates have included support for Sony’s FS700 and visual playback. So when you add AVID DNxHR support, you can see that we’re just scratching the surface of what this 4K external recorder can do.

In addition, Atomos is also showcasing their new Power Station, which offers continuous power and control over that power in remote field locations. Designed with dual-USB ports, Power Station allows users to charge 2 devices at once, along with three DC power options for camera, monitor and lighting sources.

“Hot on the heels of a successful Shogun launch,” added Young, “we now are proud to announce enhanced functionality for the Shogun, brand new Shogun accessories and we are confident our Power Station product will not only prove to be popular with Video professionals but introduce the entire photography market to the Atomos brand. You can’t help but be excited by an all in one power and charging solution”.

If you’re in the UK, you can see more at the Atomos Booth, H30, at BVE Expo this week in London.

Atomos is already one of the fastest growing companies in Pro Video and with Shogun sales fast approaching 10,000 units in the field this trend is set to continue in 2015. The reason for the success is a unique combination of cutting edge technology, an intuitive user interface and an open standards approach that together creates a faster, higher quality and more affordable end to end production schedule for end users. Perhaps the most exciting result for Atomos however is the creativity we see that Shogun unleashes for our end users – as seen in the latest show reel we created for BVE (https://vimeo.com/120444933)

The impressive Shogun has a long list of world firsts in the 4K/HD Monitor/Recorder space including first with 12G SDI & 4K HDMI connections, first with SDI to HDMI & HDMI to SDI conversion, first with pro monitor pixel density in excess of 300ppi and the first with balanced XLR audio in/out.
