With the issuing of the coveted Judges Prize, the awards phase of the 2017 My RØDE Reel Film Competition has concluded, and this year, there was a record number of submissions from over 86 countries all over the world. But who took the prize?

RØDE Microphones is excited to announce ‘My RØDE Reel’ has wrapped its fourth year, with a record 1520 films entered (up 24% from 2016’s 1224 films), along with another 1520 behind-the-scenes films. It confirms My RØDE Reel’s status as The World’s Largest Short Film Competition. – My RØDE Reel Competition Press Release

The first of twenty three awards handed out during this phase is the coveted Judges Prize, and after viewing over 1520 short films and their companion behind the scenes segments (up 24% from 2016), the judges awards Midnight Toker by Camp 905 with the top honors. “Midnight Toker was a really fun homage to classic films,” said judge Philip Bloom. “Very well executed both visually and in audio, with great direction. I was impressed and entertained. A clever film.”

The comedy thriller came from the winner of the Best Female Filmmaker category in 2016 and Canadian filmmaker/director Bea Macapagal is the first female filmmaker to take the top judges honor in the competition’s four year history.  The film tells the story of a hard working toker who takes a break with his favorite weed and ends up going on quite a trip.

“The quality this year has – almost unbelievably – improved again on last year. Congratulations to you all.” – RØDE’s CEO Damien Wilson

But the Judges’ award wasn’t the only winning category that RØDE’s was giving honors for. The judges had their hands full this year, as the general agreement was that the quality of competition this year far outweighed the offerings in previous MRR competitions. “I thought these films were outstanding and (set) such a high standard,” said My RØDE Reel Ambassador and Judge, actor-director Matilda Brown. “I have judged so many film comps and I really was so impressed, humbled and excited by these films. Well done, everyone.”
