Film Gear Site Offers Gazelle like Service
By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)
If you’re like filmmaker Philip Bloom, you probably have a lot of camera gear. And are you’re probably jonsin to upgrade. If you were lookin to get that new Apple iPad Air, you could easily go to Gazelle and trade in your old one to pay for it. But is there a similar service for trading in or selling your used camera gear? There is, and B&H is running it.
The concept is very similar to Gazelle, in that you input the model of the equipment you’re wanting to sell, and then select the condition it’s in on a scale of 1-5 (5 being like new). Then you check the original accessories that come with the device, and a quote is determined as you go. Obviously, the better condition it’s in and the more original accessories you have, the more you can trade it in for.
For instance, the value of a body only Canon 5D Mk. III that is like new with no accessories is about $1900 (but a considerably used, or battle tested body – a “1” – could only fetch you about $40). Add the accessories to the mix and you bring the value up to $2,010.
You place your quote into the shipping basket and move to check out. B&H sends you a shipping label as well, so you can ship the equipment to them for evaluation and payment. The price quote is valid for 14 days (interesting number) and is the same whether you are trading in your equipment or flat out selling it.
But it’s important to keep in mind that the quote is only an estimate and the value of your item could go up or down depending on how the B&H evaluation actually goes once they receive it. “Please understand that the figure(s) listed above are only an estimate,” the B&H Trade-in site says. A conclusive price for any item can only be set after examination by one of our technicians. If we are unable to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement after inspection, we will return your merchandise, fully insured.”
If you think that the quote, however, isn’t accurate, B&H has other ways to trade-in or sell your items to them. Users can go into B&H New York Store directly with the equipment and have it inspected. “We will inspect your equipment and give you a check or credit immediately,” the site declares.
But they do point out that Audio and video equipment that is dropped off will require a 48-72 hour inspection period. Users can email B&H directly, fax a description to (800) 520-5444, or call their used department at (800) 606-6969 ext. 2700 to receive a quote by phone. They also have an online quote form to fill out and mail.
