I Bid You Farewell, And Thanks For The Memories

I’m second from right, doing double duty covering NAB for doddleNEWS and helping the NAB Show Buzz podcast crew with social media. April 2017

By Heath McKnight (doddleNEWS)

Well, this is it, my last day as Editor-In-Chief at doddleNEWS! Nearly 6 years covering the film and video production industry, plus giving you some great geeky movie and TV news and reviews.

I started in early April 2012 after two years as Senior Writer at TopTenREVIEWS. Jim and Rich, the original owners of doddle (an industry directory and call sheets creator), added the news back in 2011, and hired a great group of writers. By early 2012, they realized they needed a dedicated editor, and that’s when I was hired. I worked in the indie film and video industry for 13 years, plus I’d written for Videomaker, Macworld, Digital Media Net, DV Info and others.

With their blessing, I expanded and refined our coverage, adding in tutorials with very talented filmmakers, and we began to really grow. We cover NAB every year, and have also covered Sundance, Cannes, Cine Gear, and more. And I was very lucky to have some of the best writers in the business, including James, Danny, Mark, Kevin, Andrew, Kimberly, Brock, Christina, Jeremiah, Pat, and others. A lot of people, and literally from all over the world!

A quick side note: We’ve covered a lot of major stories, like when Blackmagic stunned the world with the original Cinema Camera, but one the BIGGEST stories, if not the biggest, that we covered was over 5 years ago when Disney acquired Lucasfilm and green lighted Episode VII (aka, The Force Awakens). And the biggest social media hit we had was when we were able to confirm the original trilogy cast was seen in London in 2014 (no one knew if they truly were confirmed). We had over 400,000 Facebook hits!

In October 2013, Thalo.com acquired doddle, and our new bosses (led by Steven W. Roth) kept their faith in what we were doing, and we became a very tight team between all the sites. In early 2016, we acquired one of the top Final Cut Pro X and Adobe training sites LarryJordan.com and the leading industry podcast, Digital Production Buzz, and added to our incredible team some of the best talent in the industry. And we expanded our NAB coverage further with the popular NAB Show Buzz. Recently, we updated doddleNEWS to a new look!

So here I am, nearly 6 years with a fantastic company, stepping down to focus on something new and exciting: Marketing for a company that handles major accounting and sales systems. It’s new and different for me, and I do love a challenge. It’s family owned, and everyone is incredible, just like with the doddleNEWS and Thalo family. And it truly feels like a family, doddleNEWS.

In the time I worked with doddleNEWS, I began running for fun and have become a passionate runner, having completed multiple marathons, half-marathons and more. I met a wonderful woman who is now my wife, and we even bought a house together. Again, all while I worked for doddleNEWS.

I thank all my writers, the teams at LarryJordan.com and The BuZZ, Thalo (Steven, Paige, Jeff, etc.), and more. Too many to thank for helping make my job easier! And of course, thank you to our readers and fans!!!!

One more thing before I go: For the first time in over 10 years, I’m going to direct a short film, and when it’s finished, I’ll humbly ask James DeRuvo (our Senior Writer taking over my position) to link to the final movie.

ps – How appropriate that Radiohead’s Videotape from In Rainbows is playing while I write this?!

  1. Thank you, Mike! Our mission is and will always be: Informative, fun and educational. And James DeRuvo, who took over for me, is carrying on with that mission.

Again, thank you for the kind words!
