With live streaming one of the hottest things via YouTube and Facebook Live, Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty went live on YouTube today to introduce several products that will help service the live webcast market.

“Web broadcasting is the best change in television since color TV. It opens up your broadcast to a worldwide audience, and anyone can do it. It’s a new era in the TV industry and people don’t want junk products, they want high quality that’s great for broadcast and great for AV.” – Grant Petty

BMDATEMTVStNext comes an update to the ATEM Television Studio HD, a professional studio switcher for a budget price. Also a Teranex Mini-like design, the ATEM TV Studio HD has a new control panel with LCD screen and now supports 1080p for web broadcast, and includes six inputs. With the capability to work on the desktop, rather than from a rack, the TV Studio can also free up space to bring in a recorder. It’s also expandable for AV and web-based broadcasting.

The switcher itself is everything the previous model had, but with more inputs and front panel control. New features include direct control and operation without a computer, up to 1080p/60 for sports and other high frame rate needs, eight inputs (4 SDI and 4 HDMI), a DVE for picture in picture, aux output, bi-directional talkback and tally via SDI, 20 still frame media pull with flash memory backup. On the front panel, there’s an array of eight buttons that can control switching, with transitions. It’s very simple and largely automated. You select your two sources, hit auto or cut, and it makes the transition.

Audio level adjustment is through the control knob from source to source, and everything you do on the front panel is reflected in the switcher’s software, though you don’t need a companion computer to run it. Petty also added that plugging in a headset would enable on air commentary live. You can even input title graphics and fades.

“What’s exciting is that everything that isn’t on the front panel is on the LCD and it lets you completely control all the features,” Petty said.

Other features include:

  1. 4 x 3G-SDI and 4 x HDMI inputs for a total of 8 inputs, all with auto re‑sync.
  2. Supports all video formats from SD to 720p, 1080i and 1080p HD up to 60fps.
  3. 1 x built in multi view for 8 sources, as well as preview and program.
  4. Built in media pool graphics storage for 20 RGBA stills.
  5. Built in DVE with 3D borders and drop shadow.
  6. Transitions include cut, mix, dip, SMPTE wipes and more.
  7. 1 upstream keyer including chroma keyer plus 2 downstream keyers.
  8. 1 auxiliary output with front panel aux switching buttons and LCD screen for viewing.
  9. Built in audio mixer live mixes embedded audio from all video inputs and independent audio inputs.
  10. Balanced XLR stereo analog audio inputs .
  11. Internal sources include black, color bars, two color generators and 2 media player outputs.
  12. Ethernet connection for computer connection. Mac and Windows control panel software included.
  13. Compatible with all ATEM Broadcast Panel control panels when hardware panel is required.
  14. Black Burst and HD-Tri-Sync genlock input for integration into large systems.
  15. Compact ⅔ rack unit size is perfect for when in a portable solution is required.
  16. Desktop or rack mountable using the optional Teranex Mini Rack Shelf.

Price for the ATEM TV Studio HD is $995 all in and is available now.

1-blackmagic-web-presenter-laptopOne challenge is that the ATEM TV switcher doesn’t have MP4, because BMD didn’t want to pay for a feature that isn’t widely used. Instead, they decided to focus on improving the ATEM TV Studio’s switching capability and then create a separate new converter for web streaming called the Blackmagic Web Present. Petty used the Web Presenter to showcase the live stream today and it worked without a hitch.

The Web Presenter is able to reduce to resolution to match video streams via USB 2, so that web broadcasters can stream using webcams, but still keep the quality as high as it can. Initial resolution is 720p for web broadcasts, as well as dropping down from 25-5 frames per second to maintain a more viable load input.

It comes with 12G SDI so it can handle all additional camera inputs up to 2160p and then down-convert it in real time to 720p with Teranex quality video. This means web broadcasters can shoot in higher resolution and then down convert it so that it loses a minimal amount of resolution. It also works with free software like Open Broadcaster or Skype to do your broadcast. The benefit here is that you can do interviews via Skype and the Web Presenter will adjust the frame rate as the connection degrades in order to keep the image quality as consistent as it can.

Staying with a Teranex Mini size, the Web Presenter can be rack mounted or kept on your desktop, and you can even mate it to an ATEM or Teranex. You can even use the Web Presenter as a mini switcher with half second dissolves and input from external sources.

It has HDMI and SDI in and SDI loop output connections, a USB Webcam connection, and RCA stereo inputs. The Stereo in goes to a built in audio mixer as well. Other key features include:

  1. Converts any SDI or HDMI source to USB webcam video in 720p HD format.
  2. No drivers required, works with popular streaming software such as Open Broadcaster, XSplit Broadcaster, YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Periscope, Twitch.TV and more.
  3. Supports all SD, HD and Ultra HD input sources up to 2160p60.
  4. 12G-SDI input with 12G-SDI loop output.
  5. 12G-SDI program output, ideal for recording masters when doing live switching.
  6. HDMI 2.0 input with independent HDMI loop output.
  7. HDMI video input re-sync for live switching.
  8. XLR balanced mic/line level audio input.
  9. Consumer HiFi connections for 2 channels of audio input.
  10. Teranex quality down converter.
  11. Built in 2 input switcher when used with optional Teranex Mini Smart Panel.
  12. Desktop design or can be rack mounted using the Teranex Mini Rack Shelf.

Blackmagic Web Presenter is $495, and another $85 with the Teranex Mini LCD Smart Panel. Available now.

This has brought the price of the Studio camera down to $495 a piece, meaning that you can almost buy two for the price of one.

The Ultra HD model will enjoy an $800 price drop due to the new studio configuration. To see the live broadcast in real time, check it out here:
