BorisFX Takes a Step into Virtual Reality with Sapphire and Continuum Update

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

BorisFX is taking the next step into the virtual reality frontier with version 11 updates to their FX plugins Sapphire and Continuum. The result is the ability to bring the power of Mocha and green screen into the virtual space.

“Since welcoming Sapphire into the Boris FX family one year ago, we’ve been working tirelessly to deliver the best, next-gen creative VFX tools for editors, visual effects artists, and motion graphic designers,” states Boris Yamnitsky, President and Founder. “We’re excited to offer not one, but two new Academy Award caliber VFX tools to our distinguished user base.”

As its first major update since it acquired Sapphire a year ago, Boris has added several new features including Integrated Mocha planar tracking & masking, 50+ Preset Effects & Transitions, Exclusive S_Mocha Spark for the Autodesk Family and Sapphire Units.

Integrating Mocha gives Sapphire users expanded tracking features to do more advanced effects work without ever leaving their composition or timeline.  This will give post effects artists tremendous advantages by drastically reducing time spend manually key framing and masking of their assets in the time line. Utilizing the power of planar tracking when building effects gives them more time to focus on creating rather than key framing. Mocha also adds unlimited mask layers for rotoscoping.

Meanwhile, Continuum gets an update for keying and greenscreen operations, and adds tools for working within the virtual space.  Primatte Studio analyzes and optimizes your green screen image for the best possible keying & compositing while elimating those nasty halo and green fringing issues.  There’s also Manual transparency tuning, lighting adjustment to correct unevenly lit screens, Foreground object detection and working with Mocha’s masking and planar tracking system. Primatte also offers a broadcast safe zone to make broadcast safe standards.

“When we are working on 8k, stereo 360 video files, we require robust tools. Continuum’s new VR Unit inside Adobe is extremely useful for professional 360 video! We recently used Continuum 11 on a stereoscopic 360/VR project for Vogue and Google and found the VR Insert and VR Sharpen filters very intuitive and quite fast!” – Lewis Smithingham, President of VR, 30 Ninjas

Based on Mocha VR’s award-winning 360/VR tech, Continuum’s new VR Unit for 360/VR editing gives the virtual workflow five new 360 optimized filters including VR Reorient, VR Insert, VR Blur, VR Sharpen and VR Flicker Fixer. These tools are a godsend for speeding up post workflows and for avoiding seams. Supports 180, 360, mono, and stereoscopic.

Other improvements include 2D and 3D Title Studio improvements for creating OpenGL-accelerated 3D titles and for inserting 3D models into the sequence. There’s also support for materials, cameras, lights, and deformers, as well as 100+ new presets.
