When Paul Feig was given the keys to the Ghostbusters franchise, he decided to create an all-female team for his reboot. Going by his filmography, that isn’t surprising — but what is surprising is Sony has announced plans for another Ghostbusters film.
Deadline is reporting that the new movie is being developed by Channing Tatum, who is heavily rumored to star in the film; along with his partners Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan; and Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America 2 and 3), who have just signed a 3-year first look deal with Sony Pictures who are also attached to direct.
What’s more, Sony is creating a production company called Ghostcorps, spearheaded by the original film’s director Ivan Reitman and writer/star Dan Aykroyd. The new production company will also be run by Reitman’s Montecito Production partners Tom Pollock, Ali Bell, and Alex Plapinger.
Here’s what Reitman told Deadline:
We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.
During last year’s Sony hack, we learned that another version of Ghostbusters was being developed by Channing and the Russo brothers… and Chris Pratt. Columbia Pictures’ co-president of production Hannah Minghella gave out more details regarding the project:
So… in a curious turn of events – the Russos and Channing want to develop Ghostbusters as a vehicle for Channing and Chris Pratt to do together…The Russos, Channing and Reid have been brainstorming ideas and want to create a whole new mythology that would support multiple movies (the way that Nolan reinvented Batman). To be clear – the Russos want to produce (not direct) and while Channing and Chris are looking for a movie to do together they haven’t mentioned this to him yet because they weren’t sure how we’d react.
Badass Digest also seems to have some more details on the project, which could potentially be exciting. According to them, this second film will culminated in a third movie, where the Tatum/Pratt team will crossover with Paul Feig’s characters in an Avengers-style event film team-up.
The other interesting mentioned is that while all these films take place in the Ghostbusters universe, not all the films necessarily need to be about people busting ghosts. There’s also word of a fourth prequel film but no word on when that film will take place.
So now we have a Ghostbusters Cinematic Universe, Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Comics Cinematic Universe, Star Wars Cinematic Universe, and a Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe. What have you wrought, Marvel Studios??
Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot will premiere in theaters on July 22, 2016.
