DJI Unveils Ultra Rugged Matrice 200 Drone

Lets face it. While drones are pretty amazing at what they do, they’re really all that tough. A gust of wind, a stray branch, and your flying is done for the day. But DJI is seeking to confront this notion with the new Matrice 200 series drone, which can take a licking, and can fly in some of the most inhospitable regions of our fair planet.

eGsuGomrZdKZSazjsqrvJg-320-80Make no mistake, the Matrice 200 isn’t for the hobbyist looking to get into the drone game. Fully collapsible to be taken anywhere, this is an enterprise-level, professional-grade UAV which offers some pretty amazing features for collecting data and intelligence on huge architectural structures, agriculture, and even rugged geographical terrain.

It’s built with the engineer, scientist, as well as search and rescue operator in mind, and has a 7 km operation range, 38 minute max flight time, and a 2 kg max payload.

With high grade optical sensors, the M200 also sports advanced collision avoiding systems, and  centimeter level position accuracy, which levels dual GPS sensors to verify just where the drone is in the air with backup.  The accuracy also means the Matrice 200 can fly in tight spaces such as tunnels and indoor regions, as well as crevices and canyons.

The Matrice 200 has Time of Flight Upward Facing Laser System, which can keep track of any obstacle above the drone, as well as forward facing stereo vision cameras to get a true 3D first person view of the area ahead of it. There’s also sensors below it. With a near 360° awareness, there’s no way the Matrice is going to run into anything.  There’s also improved electromagnetic shielding, to prevent the Matrice from losing contact with it’s operator due to EM interference.

The Matrice 200 also has twin self heating batteries, which allows the drone to fly in sub zero temperatures and still maintain a 38 minute flight envelope.  The drone also features IP43 Ingress protection, which allows it to fly in foul weather, keeping the electronics water, dust and particle free.

Gimbal-DJI-Matrice-200Camera-wise is where things get really interesting. With multiple mounting points the Matrice 200 can put a camera and gimbal above the drone, and two cameras complete with gimbals, below. This gives the pilot the option of getting hi definition video with one camera, and then perhaps infrared footage with the other. The Matrice 200 is also compatible with  Zenmuse X4S, X5S, Z30, and XT cameras and gimbals.

Though pre-orders are available now, there’s no mention as to how much, but I’m guessing being an enterprise level product, it depends on what you need which will affect the cost. Still, the previous model, the Matrice 600 series starts at around $4600, so I’d speculate it’ll be close to that. Shipping is set for this summer. For more information, visit DJI.com.
