Doddle Digest: Spider-Man, Avengers 4, Star Wars, and Bond

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Marvel is making the press rounds for Ant-Man and the Wasp which means there is a ton of news for other Marvel franchises! From Spider-Man to Avengers 4 Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reveals some news. There’s also news for Star Wars and who Pierce Brosnan wants to play James Bond next. Also, Sony is making a Morbius movie for some reason. Check it all out below!

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Kicking it off with the recently revealed title for the next Spider-Man film. Tom Holland who plays the role of the web-crawler (and is terrible at keeping secrets) “accidentally” revealed the title of the next movie as Spider-Man: Far From Home. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke with CinemaBlend explaining that this film’s title will have a double meaning. Here’s what he said:

[It’s] similar [to ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’]. I won’t say what the meanings are, but we enjoy that title because, like ‘Homecoming’, it is full of alternate meaning. And we liked continuing the “Home” thing, with the little Spidey symbol in the “Home.”

Feige also spoke with io9 and gave a bit of detail on the setting for the next film telling the outlet:

We know it’s the summer. I think it’s summer vacation. I think he’s going to Europe with his friends.

When Marvel got their creative hands on Spider-Man, they wanted to focus on his high school experience. A European trip with friends is the kind of thing you do when you graduate which should place this film just after the events of Infinity War and Avengers 4 considering Ant-Man and the Wasp is set two years after Civil War but just before the third Avengers film.

Avengers 4 Title

Speaking of Avengers 4, we’re still anxiously awaiting the title of the fourth film. From the sound of it, we’ll be waiting a while longer. Here’s what Feige told Collider of when we should hear the new title:

That’ll be after the Captain Marvel teaser probably, announcing that title. It’ll be towards the end of the year with however we launch that film.

I guess we’ll have another few months of rumors and wild speculation before we get an official confirmation. Unless Tom Holland slips up and tells us.

Peyton Reed Still Wants to Make Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four has not had the best time on the big screen. At one time, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed was attached to direct a film based on Marvel’s first family before leaving due to creative differences. The Tim Story films were subpar and I wish I never had the chance to see the Josh Trank version. But with Disney poised to buy 20th Century Fox—who currently own the rights to the franchise—and Reed’s good relationship with Marvel, well, never say never. In an interview with CinemaBlend, he was asked whether his script might see the light of day. Here’s what he said:

Well, I have been known to mention Fantastic Four in conversations that may or may not have happened in the Marvel hallways. It’s all a giant question mark at this point, because no one knows if this merger is going to happen. It was on, it was off, it was on… who knows. I guess I can dream, right? I can have the dream. We’ll see. Time will tell!

If any studio can get Fantastic Four right it’s definitely Marvel. And if they can pull off what they did with Ant-Man, it might just be fantastic.

Jared Leto Cast as Morbius

Uh. So, Jared Leto has been cast as Morbius for a film based on the Spider-Man villain. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Morbius, here’s how the Marvel Wiki describes the character:

Dr. Michael Morbius was a brilliant scientist born in Greece who became a Nobel Prize winning biochemist. He suffered from a debilitating blood disease and developed an experimental treatment involving vampire bats and electroshocks. Its side effects turned him into a pseudo-vampire who needed to consume blood in order to survive, and gained typical vampire characteristics such as an aversion to sunlight, and the powers of flight, enhanced strength, speed, and healing (a healing factor). His overall appearance changed as well: he gained fangs, his nose flattened to appear more bat-like, and his skin became extremely pale. Additionally, the victims of his bite would turn into living vampires themselves. When he first experienced the change, he killed the assistant who had helped him develop the treatment.

Basically, he’s a vampire made via scientific means. In the comics he becomes something of an anti-hero like Venom. Life director Daniel Espinosa has been tapped to helm the project which has been in development since at least last fall. Sony has desperately been trying to get a Spider-Man universe off the ground and a standalone Venom film makes sense since he’s a pretty popular character. But Morbius? Maybe they have a good idea for it but I’m very skeptical.

Ewan McGregor’s Obi Wan Kenobi

A bit of news regarding Ewan McGregor reprising his role as Obi Wan Kenobi has emerged. But you should take it with a great big grain of salt as it comes from a source to The Sun which is reporting that McGregor will secretly film a part in Star Wars: Episode IX. Here’s what the source had to say:

Ewan will secretly film for the next Star Wars movie. Disney have been mulling over a stand-alone film for Obi-Wan. There have been concerns about getting the story right.

Well, that last part is no surprise after what happened with Solo. What’s happening with the Star Wars Story films is a bit up in the air and Lucasfilm is said to be licking their wounds—so maybe this is a way of hedging their bets. This also wouldn’t be the first time they brought McGregor back as his voice could briefly be heard in The Force Awakens.

Pierce Brosnan Wants Tom Hardy as the Next Bond

Switching gears, Pierce Brosnan—who played James Bond in four films—has endorsed Tom Hardy as his choice for the next James Bond. The actor told The Daily Mail what he thought of Daniel Craig in the role and slipped in who he thinks should take over:

Daniel Craig has been an incredible Bond. He’s very physical, he looks lethal. You genuinely believe this is someone who could kill a man.

[…]

[Craig’s] complained about doing the part because he’s put himself through a lot physically, but he will do the next movie, and then I think Tom Hardy could be a good Bond. I’d be happy to see him do it. You need an actor who can put a bit of wiggle into it – that’s what makes Bond.

Hardy would make a great Bond but he would be in his early to mid 40s by the time he takes on the role. There’s also something about an unknown or under-the-radar actor taking on the role that I really like.

So tons of stuff from Marvel and Lucasfilm, but the strangest bit of news still seems to be that Morbius film. An actor being in both a DC and Marvel film isn’t that uncommon as Lawrence Fishburne is in the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp after being in Man of Steel and Batman V Superman, for instance. So Leto should be able to play both Joker and Morbius. But in the larger scheme of news with Warner Bros. cleaning up their DC properties and a film starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker, I can’t help but wonder if Leto is on his way out.
