We have a ton of news for the Jon Favreau Star Wars television series including our first description of the plot! There’s also news on a new Disney live action remake and about a television adaptation of the Wheel of Time books.
There is also a rumor as to who might play the titular Mandalorian. Making Star Wars is reporting that Game of Thrones and Narcos star Pedro Pascal might play the central lead character which couldn’t be better casting. There’s another report from Making Star Wars that reveals Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels showrunner Dave Filoni will make is live action directorial debut helming two episodes of the series. There’s even speculation that Werner Herzog may have a role in the upcoming series as well as a familiar Star Wars location popping up in the series.
This sounds amazing as an idea for the series. Gives me a very The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly or David Carradine’s Kung Fu in space kind of vibe which is perfect for a Star Wars series. I also like that the setting of the series will be after Return of the Jedi and explore what happened after the fall of the Empire. We still don’t know how long after the fall the series will be set since there’s a 30 year period to explore but it sounds like Favreau has hit upon the perfect idea for a TV show. I cannot wait to see it!
Update: From StarWars.com comes the first official photo from The Mandalorian:
Star Wars Rebels director Dave Feloni has also been confirmed as directing the premiere episode, with Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) also helming an episode. Other episodic directors include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), and Jurassic World’s Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates).
Lilo & Stitch Live Action Remake
Here’s the next live action remake of a Disney movie: the Hawaii set Lilo & Stitch. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the producers of the live action Aladdin are attached while Mike Van Waes has been tapped to pen the screenplay.
Since the story broke I know a few fans have decried the idea of a live action remake but I think it could actually be good. Something along the lines of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial would be fantastic. But it could easily go the other way and be more Mac and Me that E.T.
Wheel of Time Coming to Amazon
Amazon has announced that they will be producing the wildly popular Wheel of Time fantasy series. At the Amazon Prime Video Presents showcase in London, head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke said the following (via SyFy Wire):
The Wheel of Time is endlessly fascinating and resonates hugely with fans as one of the best-selling global book franchises, and we were drawn to its timely narrative featuring powerful women at the core. We’re thrilled to extend our relationship with devotees who’ve found the book series transformative and welcome new ones by bringing it to life on Prime Video for viewers worldwide.
This is the second big fantasy series that Amazon is producing with the other being the grand-daddy of them all, Lord of the Rings. It really sounds like everyone is trying to make the next Game of Thrones but Wheel of Time brings a few particular problems. The big one is that the series is 14 volumes long and I doubt the series will end up being 14 seasons long so there will be some truncating happening with the series.
