doddleDIGEST: Star Wars and Hawkeye TV Series

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

With the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker dropping, you just knew a ton of news would land about it and the Star Wars universe in general. But before we get to that big stuff, let’s check in with something smaller.

Hawkeye TV Series

Avengers: Endgame is just around the corner but there is a question as to what’s next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We know that there are several TV series being developed for Disney+ which include WandaVision, Loki, and Falcon & Winter Soldier but Variety has reported that another series is in the works: Hawkeye.

According to the outlet, while the series will star Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, it will actually focus on Kate Bishop. Variety describes it as an “adventure series in which Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, will pass the torch to Kate Bishop. Bishop is a Marvel Comics character who took up the Hawkeye mantle after Barton.” I’ve suspected that Marvel will retire most of the original line up of Avengers so giving Hawkeye this kind of retirement feels like the right way to do it.

Star Wars

There is a LOT of Star Wars news to catch up on since the release of the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker so let’s dive right in!

Knights of the Old Republic in Development

One of the best Star Wars stories was actually a video game. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was a MMORPG that I played years and years ago but has stayed with me as a classic Star Wars tale. MTV had a chance to talk with Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy who confirmed that something was in the works.

We talk about that all the time. Yes, we are developing something to look at. Right now I have no idea where things might fall. But we have to be careful that there is a cadence to Star Wars that doesn’t start to feel like too much.

She doesn’t say whether it is a game, movie, TV series, or book series but I can’t help but point out that a recent rumor had D.B. Weiss and David Benioff’s film trilogy set in the distant past of the Star Wars universe. Could they really be working on a KotOR film? Seems very possible.

Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars 9

One of the big surprises from the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker trailer was that the Emperor is back. How he is back is still unknown (although I have my theories) but when Lucasfilm had decided to bring him back seems to go back a while. Here’s what Kennedy told Yahoo Entertainment’s Kevin Polowy.

This has been in the blueprint for a long time, yeah. We had not landed on exactly how we might do that, but yes, it was always [to be in Episode IX].

I suspect that having Ian McDiarmid come back as the Emperor was part of Abrams’ original plan to where the series would go back when he rewrote The Force Awakens. The Emperor is the ultimate bad guy in the Star Wars universe and I cannot wait to find out what they have planned for this.

J.J. Abrams on Rey’s Parents

Another interesting tidbit comes from Abrams on Rey’s parentage. Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi revealed that her parents were no one of consequence and many fans wondered if The Rise of Skywalker would retcon that. Here’s what Abrams said to ABC News:

I will say that we knew, going into this, that this movie, it had to be a satisfying conclusion. And we were well aware that that’s one of the things that’s been out there. I don’t want to say that what happens in Episode 8 [didn’t happen]. We have honored that. But I will say that there’s more to the story than you’ve seen.

The easy way around her lineage is that Kylo Ren was simply lying about her parents. It’s also possible that whoever left her on Jakku weren’t her real parents but both of those solutions feel like copouts. I am one of those who really likes the idea of her coming from nothing and becoming a Jedi. Perhaps there is a better explanation so I’ll reserve judgement until Christmas.
