Donald Glover On Playing Lando Calrissian In Star Wars: Han Solo

Very rarely in the original Star Wars trilogy do you see a character who is grappling with having to make a difficult decision. That’s actually what makes Billy Dee Williams’ character Lando Calrissian so intriguing in The Empire Strikes Back — he was a suave character who made a tough call to protect his citizens. Ultimately, he may have made the wrong call, but he then goes out of his way to make amends.

With the new Han Solo spinoff film, it was exciting to not only learn that the character would be returning, but that Donald Glover would be playing the role. Not only am I excited, but so is Glover, telling Deadline about his own personal connection to the character. Here’s what he told the outlet:

“Lando’s a big deal. He’s the first toy I ever got. […]

“It’s interesting, when you have something iconic in a range when people pay attention to it, it’s hard. You want to live up to the expectation, but you can only live up to your own.”

Both Glover and Alden Ehrenreich have some mighty big shoes to fill, playing the two archetypical scoundrels of Lando Calrissian and Han Solo in the upcoming film. While Glover has set his own expectations to bringing a younger version of Lando to the screen, his approach is pretty simple:

“I just want to have fun. I know the directors Phil (Lord) and Chris (Miller), and I love the guy (Alden Ehrenreich) who is playing Han. It’s gonna be a fun time.”

Unlike Rogue One, there are rumors that the Han Solo spinoff will not be a one-and-done film, but rather the first part in a trilogy, so we may see Glover pop up again. I suspect that even if that ends up being true, it would still end up being a bit less episodic in nature than the saga stories. My own personal hope is that they bring Felicity Jones back for a possible sequel, since I think she would make a great addition to any Han Solo heist.

What would make this a bit more difficult is that currently Lucasfilm has structured a saga film one year, followed by an anthology film the next. That would place a possible sequel in 2020, although that film has been long rumored to be a Boba Fett movie. With the success of Rogue One at the box office, I would bet my money on the studio ramping up to releasing two films a year in the future, with possible May and December release months.

Han Solo: A Star Wars Story will premiere in 2018, though rumors are circulating that it could move from May to December.
