RED is one of the dominant camera manufacturers in Hollywood today. A few months ago, the company released their new IPP2 image pipeline workflow, which covered changes to the firmware, wiring options, and the software. Effectively, they were future proofing the platform as the industry moves towards high dynamic range (HDR).
FilmConvert has just released a new RED DRAGON camera updat,e which includes that new IPP2 pipeline developed by RED. The new standardized REDWideGamutRGB / LOG3G10 has made it easier to apply FilmConvert’s camera profiles to RED footage.
FilmConvert’s plugin works with a wide range (and ever-growing list) of popular cameras to match specific film stocks. Instead of procedurally created film grain, FilmConvert’s profiles use real grain scanned at 6K resolution, which is then added to your footage. The grain layer isn’t just added over your image, either, but uses a complex density-based grain algorithm which is calculated and integrated based on the underlying colors.
Because FilmConvert has so many profiles for different cameras, you can mix and match different cameras but keep the same look throughout them. That means if you need to shoot something on a GoPro, for example, you can apply the same film stock look as your RED DRAGON shot footage in order to keep a consistent look to your image between two very different types of cameras.
FilmConvert is available as a free 30-day watermarked trial which you can download here. The standalone license will run you up $149, or you could also purchase the FilmConvert bundle for $219, which offers all of the standalone plugins. You can check them all out here [affiliate link].
