The Alien franchise goes back almost 40 years and in that time only one great sequel was ever produced. Alien 3 was a studio mess, Alien: Resurrection was just just strange, and Prometheus saw Ridley Scott return to spearhead a prequel. The prequel was uneven at best. Beautifully shot but elements of the story were just poorly thought out.
Scott is returning for a second prequel with Alien: Covenant and so far it looks pretty good. Now Fox has released a four minute prologue called Alien: Covenant | Prologue: Last Supper which shows the crew right before they go into cryosleep. Check that out below:
This is the first time an Alien film feels like a true follow up to the original. It mimics the chestburster scene where John Hurt’s Kane keels over on top of the table and a baby Xenomorph pops out.
I can’t help but point out the religious allegory of calling this prologue Last Supper. I don’t know if I’m reading too much into it but there’s something about a bearded James Franco in that brown blanket which evokes something Christ-like. But Franco’s character is too sick to deliver the toast before entering hibernation, so it falls to Daniels to deliver it. That’s where we get this shot which mimics the Leonardo Da Vinci painting this prologue borrows its title from. There’s even a Judas/MacBeth-like character in the scene trying to deliver a speech.
The religious motifs shouldn’t be surprising since they were baked into the film title and the name of the ship itself. A covenant is a formal agreement between man and God so I suspect that theme will play a major factor in this film.
Just like the previous prequel used the Greek legend of Prometheus as a motif of the creation of man, I think something about as symbolic is happening here. It makes you wonder what the next Alien prequel will be called. My bet is on something Alien: Babylon or something along those lines. Something that will sound biblically defiant.
In addition, Empire (hat tip: Screen Rant) released this image:
Alien: Covenant will premiere in theaters on May 19. Here’s the official synopsis:
Ridley Scott returns to the universe he created, with ALIEN: COVENANT, a new chapter in his groundbreaking ALIEN franchise. The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world.
