The backbone of any post-production house are their shared storage solutions. While in the past these machines tended to be large rack-mounted devices, they’re now been entering lightweight desktop sizes.

EditShare Ultra is one of these solutions and is now available from our friends at MacVideo Promo for a limited time in configurations starting at just $5,995. Ultra incorporates EditShare’s media asset management software Flow and its Project Sharing feature, which allows a group of editors to work in tandem, in the same project simultaneously.

At only 8.5 inches by 12 inches by 8.5 inches, the box itself is small enough to sit on the corner of your desk and weight in at about 20 pounds. It was engineered to be quiet, with an average sound level at under 45 decibels so you won’t feel like there is a Boeing 747 preparing for take-off next to you

Ultra can use up to four 7,200 RPM enterprise class SATA drives. This will allow a production house to support up to 6 streams of ProRes HQ/DNxHD 220 Mbit video, 8 streams of ProRes 422/DNxHD 145 Mbit video, or 24 streams of XDCAM/HDV/DV 25 Mbit video.

It sports two gigabit ethernet ports, allowing two editors to work on a single project, but the bandwidth can be combined via a low-cost switch, which will allow you to connect up to four clients simultaneously.

Ultra runs on a rock-solid Linux OS that has been optimized for media workflows and works with Avid, Final Cut Pro X, Premiere Pro, EDIUS, and Lightworks NLE suites.

Here are the hardware specifications for the EditShare Ultra:

  1. Server class Intel Xeon Dual Core E3 CPU with hyperthreading
  2. 16GB ECC high speed RAM
  3. Four 3.5” enterprise-class 7,200 RPM SATA media drives
  4. Mirrored 2.5” 320GB SATA 3Gb/s OS drives
  5. 6Gb/s Hardware RAID Controller with SATA/SAS ports
  6. RAID 5 standard
  7. Automatic and manual background rebuilding of drives in the event of failure
  8. Rebuild and verification priority settings

There are two versions on sale at a reduced price: A 16TB configuration with about 12TB of usable storage available for $5,995, or a 24TB configuration with about 18TB of storage available for $7,995. Their are a limited number of EditShare Ultras available at this price and you can order them from Mac Video Promo here.
