This article contains massive spoilers for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story! You have been warned.
It’s been a week since I sat down to watch Rogue One. Following its release, a whole bunch of easter eggs and behind-the-scenes news have poured out. One of the more interesting bits of news is that Felicity Jones has a single sequel option in her contract to return as Jyn Erso. The problem here, of course, is that she doesn’t make it out of the events in Rogue One alive.
There are a lot of rumors out there about a possible sequel or prequel for the film. One of the ideas floating around is that she’s attached to a Luke Skywalker standalone film, which — if it takes place before the events of Rogue One/A New Hope — could be pretty boring. Another possibility was that, originally, a second movie was considered before the decision to kill off the entire cast of Rogue One was made.
I really like the character of Jyn Erso, so the idea of seeing her again in another film is really appealing to me. One of the things I don’t want to see is a new scene that takes place moments before she dies that retcons her death on Scarif, so a sequel is out of the question. I also don’t want to see a Luke Skywalker prequel where she hangs out on Tatooine moisture farming.
There is a very exciting possibility to bring her character back for a second movie that makes sense. We know that when she was fifteen Forest Whitaker’s character Saw Gerrera abandons her and she has to survive on her own, as per the cut line found in the trailer. Wookiepedia puts her age at 22 during the events of Rogue One, which gives us about seven years to explore the character, but I’m not sure I want to watch a ‘Jyn Erso on her own’ film.
So what we have is a character who lives on the other side of Imperial law, and has probably done her own fair share of thieving. Which other character lives on that side of the law, and is going to have his own Star Wars standalone film? That’s right, it is the Han Solo standalone Star Wars movies.
We’ve heard rumors that Disney and Lucasfilm are planning a trilogy of Han Solo movies set before the events of A New Hope, which will explore what he did before the character gets involved with the Rebellion. Considering both he and Jyn conceivably run in the same circles, it would be the perfect place to bring Jones’ character back. She could even be a possible romantic interest, since we know that it will never work out in the end, because she won’t be around much longer. For my money, I would call this the best and most plausible way for Lucasfilm to execute the sequel (prequel) clause in Jones’ contract.
