HitFilm Pro Tutorial: Lesson 5 – Editing Pt 3: Editing Clips Into Your TImeline

By Kevin P. McAuliffe (doddleNEWS)

In our last lesson, in our look at learning HitFilm Pro 2017, we talked about Media Properties, and how you can use it to get more information about your clips/media. In this lesson, I want to talk specifically about editing, and how you can start to edit your timelines together.

Once you’ve imported footage to work with, it’s time to start picking the parts of the shots you want to use in HitFilm Pro. Choose a shot to start with, and double click on it. It will call the clip up into the Trimmer.

Before we move on, there’s an important concept that you need to understand, and that’s JKL editing. JKL editing is common across pretty much all NLE’s, and it’s pretty simple. “J” on the keyboard plays backwards, “K” stops playing, and “L” plays forwards. You can use these keys to quickly find the in and out points in a clip. Keep in mind that you can double and triple press on a key to go twice and three times as fast, and you can hit “I” or “O” at any time to add an In or Out point.

Adding In and Out points

Once you have the clip marked, and are ready to drop it onto the video track in your timeline, or press “B” to Insert edit or “N” to overlay. Now, I don’t particularity care for these keyboard settings, so I’m going to show you how to change them in our next lesson.
