IBC 2017: Adobe Announces Their 2018 Creative Cloud Update

With up to 82% of all internet traffic being video streaming, we are currently in the golden age of video. Adobe says that not only will streaming content be the focus, but also a virtual and augmented reality second screen experience which will give content creators more points of connection with their audience. To meet that need, at IBC this week Adobe is announcing their 2018 Fall Update for Creative Cloud that promises to give filmmakers and professionals key tools for their post production workflow.

“Video is the fastest growing medium in communications and entertainment. Whether you’re an online creator, global media company or filmmaker, you need to deliver world-class content across all platforms and formats at incredible speed,” said Bryan Lamkin, senior vice president of Digital Media at Adobe. “Adobe is breaking new ground in collaboration, social sharing and analytics to accelerate workflows for all video creators.”

Adobe Premiere.  Adobe has announced a series of time savings tools that will service to eliminate the tedious things that usually plague all workflows. Chief amongst these are gaps that end up in your editing time line due to placeholders or clips that get removed. To ripple down the edit time line and eliminate those gaps, Adobe now has a keyboard shortcut that will do just that. All you need to do is select all your clips, then use a shortcut called “magic keyboard” and the gaps disappear. In the edit menu, that’s under sequence, and then “close gaps.”

Premiere also has a new label color feature that helps to keep your clips and assets more organized. Originally, Premiere came with 8 colored labels, but now that’s been doubled to 16, with the option to customize them according to various shades the editor would prefer. Adobe has also provided the ability to open more than one project at a time and share assets between them. Once open, the post production team can undock the assets from one project and then move it to your other project to use them as you need. This is great for episodic television production, where assets may need to be accessed from a previous episode to craft a clip show, for instance.

This also opens the door for more collaborative workflows that enable users to access other projects on the network that are being worked on by other team members, lock projects, or provide read only access to others. This is part of Adobe’s Team Projects initiative.

Virtual Reality. Fresh off their acquisition of Mettle’s Skybox VR Tool Suite, Adobe has begun implementing these tools into Creative Cloud for use in the virtual reality workflow.  By incorporating a dedicated viewing environment in Premiere Pro, Adobe Editors can review their VR timeline and use keyboard-driven editing for trimming and placing of markers, while seeing those changing immersively by wearing the same VR head-mounts as their audience. Additionally, audio can be directed by orientation or position and exported as ambisonics audio for VR-enabled platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. VR effects and transitions are now native and accelerated via the Mercury playback engine. The update also has handheld controllers that pop up within the VR space, but can be manipulated through the real life controller in your hand. The VR timeline can also be brought up in the headset view, so you don’t have to waste time putting your headset on and off dozens of times a day.

After Effects. Seeing that graphics and animation are becoming multi platform, Adobe is updating their Essential Graphics Panel to make motion graphics more flexible and use those motion graphics as templates that can be accessible through Adobe Stock and Creative Cloud’s own libraries. So once you craft a cool motion graphic template, you can offer it through Adobe Stock, opening up an additional revenue stream. Adobe has also completed the incorporation of the old After Effects Titler and now every toolset is available through the Essential Graphics Panel. There’s also a filterable font menu to that you can access your most used type faces through Adobe Type Kit, along with support for Ligatures.

Adobe Audition. Speaking of Audio, Adobe Audition’s Essential Sound Panel is getting an auto ducking feature that will automatically adjust levels by type, dialogue, background sounds, or music. The ESP will also gain flexible session organization with multi-take workflows and continuous playback while editing, through Adobe Sensei.

Adobe Character Animator gets promoted to its own place in the Creative Cloud Suite. Now users can create their own projects solely within Character Animator 1.0 and get some new tools which include custom animation functions like pose to pose blending, visual puppet controls, and improved lip sync capability. Using Adobe Sensit, lip sync is improved btw matching mouth shape with spoken sounds, and being able to insert custom words based on regional dialects.

Lastly, Adobe continues to build Adobe Stock’s massive catalog of assets, which now has over 90 million photos, illustrations and vectors. Those assets are available in HD and 4K, and now users can search for those assets within Premiere Pro, and then stub them to look for in and  out points directly within the workflow. As mentioned, Motion Graphics Templates including lower thirds, titles, bumpers and end credit rolls have also been added, along with the ability to submit and monetize your own. These join the previous updates of Pond 5, Reuters, USA Today Sports, Stocksy and 500px.

The update is being previewed this week at Adobe’s booth at IBC and will be available to users later this year.
