There are very few movies I consider perfect, and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark ranks up there amongst the best. From that we got one good sequel in Temple of Doom, one nearly perfect sequel with The Last Crusade, and one misguided sequel with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That last film left a pretty sour taste in people’s mouths, and made fans hope for a fifth film to right all of its wrongs.
While there had been rumblings of a remake starring Chris Pratt, Disney denied it. Then we heard movement was being made on a Harrison Ford-led fifth film with plans of Steven Spielberg directing it. Today we’ve officially been given confirmation that this is happening, as Disney announced the project. Here’s what the house-of-mouse said in a statement on their website:
“Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019, for a fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series. Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”’
That’s pretty much all we’ve been told about Indiana Jones 5, so let the speculation begin!
First of all, there seems to be no involvement from George Lucas, which many fans will take as a good sign. We also don’t know what object the character will be after this time, as well, nor if either Karen Allen or Shia LaBeouf will be reprising their roles as Marion and Mutt. I suspect not. However, I do hope that fan favorite John Rhys-Davies will be brought back as Sallah.
I still think that the character can be rebooted with a new actor taking on the role, much in the same way that the James Bond series recasts the character. Ford will be 77 by the time this film comes out, which would make it a great way to send the character off into the sunset on a high note. They could introduce a new actor as a younger Indy as a way to soft reboot the franchise.
But the big exciting thing is that I can proudly say the following: Indiana Jones 5 will premiere in theaters on July 19, 2019.
