Alcon Entertainment’s co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson released a statement confirming the huge casting news and promised that Leto would play a “key role” in the highly anticipated movie.
The statement said: “He is a phenomenal actor, and we know he will create a truly memorable, never-before-seen character.”
The development of any sequel to a classic film is almost always controversial. But amid accusations of Hollywood ‘cashing in’ on past glories, there is no denying that Alcon is assembling a phenomenal team for this blockbuster project.
Villeneuve, who helmed the Prisoners, Sicario and the upcoming Arrival, is one of the industry’s biggest talents and will be working alongside the legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins (No Country For Old Men, Skyfall).
Very little is known about the story other than that Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckard from the first film.
Hampton Fancher, who co-scripted Scott’s classic, has written the sequel’s screenplay with Michael Green, who has also penned the upcoming Alien: Covenant. The 1982 film was adapted from Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Blade Runner 2 will be an original piece of work inspired by the source material.
Filmmaker Scott, who has publicly praised the script, will exec-produce the movie which he planned to direct but handed over duties to Villeneuve because of his enormous work schedule.
Blade Runner 2 will arrive in theaters on October 5, 2017.
