Suicide Squad star Jared Leto will play iconic artist Andy Warhol in a screen biopic written by the Wolf of Wall Street’s Terence Winter.

The Oscar winning actor will also produce alongside Hollywood heavyweight Michael De Luca who boasts a string of successful real-life story credits including The Social Network, Captain Phillips and Moneyball.

Titled Warhol, the movie will reportedly use Victor Bockris 1989 book Warhol: The Biography as inspiration and will center upon the life of the celebrated artist.

Whether you’re a fan of his art or not, Andy Warhol is an incredibly fascinating subject and his extraordinary life seems ripe for the biopic treatment. He became one of the art world’s biggest names in the 1960s and was famed for hanging out with A-list celebrities who often became the subject of his work.

But aside from his incredible life, which also included managing the Velvet Underground and surviving a gun attack in 1968, Warhol’s personality is arguably the most intriguing part of all. He was an openly gay staunch Catholic mummy’s boy who was renowned for being cold and shallow.

Leto, who is producing under his Paradox production banner, won an Acadmey Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as a gay man dying of AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club.

Screenwriter Winter first hit the big time with his work on HBO’s The Sopranos before creating Boardwalk Empire for the cable channel. The writer was Oscar-nominated for his work on Martin Scorsese’s subversive box office smash The Wolf of Wall Street.

The Warhol biopic will reportedly have a sizeable budget and is targeting a mainstream audience. And considering the talent involved, there will most likely be a big awards push come release time.

Still no news on production start dates. Stay tuned for more news.
