On the eve of the premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story we’ve received word that another Star Wars spinoff is in talks with signing on a director. No, it’s not the long time rumored Kenobi film — it’s the other long rumored film starring Boba Fett.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Logan director James Mangold is in talks to helm the solo Boba Fett movie. The report also indicates he’ll be co-writing the screenplay with X-Men: Dark Phoenix screenwriter/director Simon Kinberg who was previously rumored to be working on the Fett film.
This isn’t the first time a Boba Fett movie has seen movement. Originally, Josh Trank who directed the disastrous Fantastic Four reboot, was officially tapped to helm a movie about the bounty hunter before leaving (or being fired from) the film. That was supposed to be the movie that would have premiered this memorial day weekend but after it fell apart Solo was moved up from a 2020 release.
Mangold is currently in the process of casting his film about the rivalry between Ford and Ferrari so even if he is officially announced by Lucasfilm, odds are that this film won’t be the one that is set to premiere in 2020. My bet is that we’ll still get that Kenobi spinoff film that Stephen Daldry has been all but confirmed to helm after Star Wars: Episode IX.
What Will It Be About?
If we do get a Boba Fett movie there’s still a question as to what the plot will be about. Unlike a Solo or a Kenobi film, a Boba Fett movie has the ability to take place after the events of Return of the Jedi. Officially, the character met his end by being eaten by the Sarlacc but if anyone can make his way out of the pit, it would be Boba Fett who does so in the Legends canon.
Another intriguing possibility is that Samuel L. Jackson has been keen to return to a galaxy far, far away as Mace Windu who killed Boba Fett’s father Jango Fett in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. It is possible that Mace survived his hands being cut of and thrown out of Chancellor Palpatine/Darth Sidious’ window. Luke Skywalker survived something similar so maybe a film set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope where he hunts down Mace.
Then there’s the question of whether Temuera Morrison will reprise the role considering Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett. If he is cast to play the character then I suspect this film would be set post Return of the Jedi. Considering the past two Star Wars story films were set pre-A New Hope and the Kenobi film must be set in that time period as well, my money is on recasting Boba in the same way that Solo recast Han and having it place at that time. Besides, having him finally face off against Mace Windu has far more of a personal goal and bring resolution to that storyline. And hey, maybe we’ll get some cameos from Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover.
