One of my favorite quotes is from photographer Ansel Adams, who said “The best camera is the one you have with you.” That’s pretty much a smartphone in a nutshell, and with mobile filmmaking gaining a lot of ground of late, having great accessories to push the video image to cinematic heights is always welcome. Enter the for Moment Lenses new Filmmaker Collection, a kit of mobile filmmaking accessories that takes your mobile video to new heights.
“We love to shoot video and we’ve always wanted gear that makes it easier to shoot cinematic video on our phones. Today we have that with our new Anamorphic Lens, iPhone X Battery Case, Universal Counterweight, and Filter Mount. – Moment Lenses via Kickstarter
Designed to take the mobile filmmaker to the next level, the Moment Lenses Filmmaker Collection enables users to incorporate several of their latest mobile phone accessories with their handheld gimbal stabilizers and keep it properly balanced and steady.
The centerpiece of the collection is their new Anamorphic lens attachment. Dubbed the “holy grail of cinematic filmmaking” anamorphic lenses provide that big budget wide screen vibe on a mobile budget. Moment’s Anamorphic Lens provides the proper “squeeze” to create the widescreen letterboxes look, as well as giving users the option of replicating horizontal flares that were the hallmark of these remarkable old school lenses.
“Moment’s new lens designs are super exciting. The Moment guys are super awesome dudes that care about filmmaking, photography and the process. To put the power of anamorphic into the hands of the every day user, I’m super pumped about that.” – Peter McKinnon
Anamorphic Lens Specifications
- Magnification : 1.33x Horizontal Squeeze
- Aspect Ratio (video) after de-squeeze: 2.40:1 Cinemascope

With an MSRP of $149, Moment is currently offering them for $99 during their Kickstarter campaign.
Next, for iPhone X users, Moment has a wireless battery case that will extend the battery life of their smartphones during an all day shoot. With a 3100 mAh battery, users will be able to shoot twice as much video without worrying about stopping to recharge. It also comes with a hard shutter button that will give users tangible, old school control to start and stop without having to touch the screen. The iPhone X battery also uses Qi charging to power up. Cost will be $99, but users can pick one up for $69 by backing their Kickstarter campaign.
I’m going to skip over the gimbal for a second and talk about the Moment Filter Mount. This mount will enable users to press fit any standard 62mm filters to Moment lenses, including the new square Anamorphic lens (I guess you can fit a square peg into a round hole!). The filter mount will cost $39.99 but you can back it for just under $32.
Now back to the Gimbal Counterweight. I just got my DJI Osmo Mobile 2 (review coming soon) and I really love it. But I can’t use any attachments like filters or lenses because it will throw off the balance. This is my chief beef with gimbal stabilizers of the handheld kind because there is such a narrow envelope of weight and balance to keep a mobile device stabile during movement. Add a lens and suddenly that balance is thrown off and no matter of adjustment will solve it.
Unless you use a counterweight, and Moment has worked hard to craft one that perfectly counter balances the weight of your Moment case and lens setup that includes any lens and filters attached. The adjustable design gives users the ability to add 60g, 90g or 120g, so users can deploy all or part of the filmmaker kit and not have to worry about futzing with the balance of their gimbal.
This is the one option in the filmmaker kit I am most excited about after the anamorphic lens! Cost is cheap too, at $29 for Kickstarter backers and $39.99 after it hits the market. Users can back all or select pairs of the mobile filmmaking kit on Kickstarter, and the good news is, they’ve already raised 5x their stated goal, meaning we’re definitely going to get this kit when it’s ready in Jun 2018.
The Moment Lenses Filmmaking Collection is definitely one for the Kickstarter campaigns we love category!
