Phil Lord & Chris Miller Talk Animated Spider-Man Movie, & The Flash Film

By Danny F. Santos (doddleNEWS)

Writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, and 21 Jump Street) are currently batting 1000. What’s more is they’re currently developing both a Marvel and a DC film right now for both Sony and Warner Bros. Those two films are an animated Spider-Man film and a feature-length Flash movie.

Miller and Lord spoke with podcasters Hippojuice about both projects and the challenges with adapting The Flash, which is already a popular television show on The CW, which is separate from the DC Comics Cinematic Universe.

We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright… I believe [our Flash] is going to be Barry Allen… We’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… [Our Flash] really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie. We’re just trying to think of the best story. It’s kind of a different take on superhero stuff.

Warner Bros. has been pushing the concept of a filmmaker-driven DC Comics Cinematic Universe which Lord and Miller’s Flash will be a part of, and will star Ezra Miller (We Need To Talk About Kevin). The DC universe has also been described as a multiverse by Chief Creative Officer at DC Comics Geoff Johns, which is why you can have two different actors playing the same character — the film and TV universes are separate.

It should be noted that the season finale of the television series has hinted at parallel worlds for season 2, so there may be some hints to the film in the future (so at least it could be SOMEWHAT connected). Their approach to The Flash movie also informs how they’re going to be approaching their animated Spider-Man film, which will not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or be connected to the new live-action film that Sony and Marvel Studios are jointly producing.

It does get tricky, but it’s the same thing, is there a way to do one of these movies in a new way? That’s the exciting thing about it being animated, is it opens up a lot of different possibilities. Chris and I like to carve out spaces where people will let us do what we want. So much of our careers are… these huge franchises, but kind of off a little bit to the side, and that gives us a lot of creative freedom, and that’s the thing we love. Hopefully we won’t waste that.

The Flash will premiere in theaters on March 23, 2018, while there is no release date set for the animated Spider-Man film yet.
