At a certain point you have to stop and look around at all of the really cool tools filmmakers have at their disposal these days. We have the ability to shoot a movie on a phone, and there are cloud-based sound libraries, which make it incredibly fast and easy to find the right sound effect you’re looking for.
Well now there’s a tool called Filmstro, which is a stock music app for film, video, and television, and it’s on steroids. Where most stock music sites sell a single piece of music which an editor will need to chop and retime to the cut (or edit it to the new piece of music), Filmstro introduces powerful proprietary tools to change the music. Check out this quick example below:
Filmstro works with a roster of talented composers from around the world, who write music in a way that allows you to intuitively control it. They write musical cues which are sorted into categories in the app, in order to be manipulated.
The editor then has the ability to change three different settings: Momentum, depth, and power. You can control them easily with three sliders to make the music sound sparse or busy, give it a high or low register, and you can make the music as soft or as powerful as you like all within the same theme music cue.
Here is where it gets even more fun as the app also allows you to draw and control the three setting with envelops and keyframes. So if you need to ramp up the music in a scene or slow it down you can automate it by timing parameter changes using the graph editor within the application. There’s even an auto keyframing interface, which allows you to manipulate the sliders in real time as you watch the video.
As great as that is Filmstro has made their product even better by integrating directly into Premiere Pro through the accessory panel. This will give you the ability to create and change the music even before you have picture lock helping you to both refine the music and image at the same time.
Filmstro uses a monthly pricing model with a variety of subscription tiers, depending on your music usage requirements. The prices range from $9.99 per month, all the way up to $199.99 per month. They also offer a one-time month pass for those production studios or individuals who require it on a project-to-project basis.
