RED Announces Shot on RED Film Festival

Winners to receive RED Scarlet-X Package

By James DeRuvo (doddleNEWS)

RED Guru Jarred Land took to the RED User Forums today and announced  the Shot on RED Film Festival, a competition that is open to any shooter who has a short or feature film that has been shot on a RED camera. The ultimate prize? A RED SCARLET-X package!

RED is proud to introduce the official first annual SHOT ON RED Film Festival, a showcase of short and feature length independent projects shot on RED cameras.  Held on December 4-5th in Hollywood, CA, this event is intended to bring together some of the brightest visionaries from all over the world, recognizing both the filmmakers and their work. – Jarred Land on REDUser Forums

The winners of best in show will receive a RED SCARLET-X camera package.  Finalists will receive gear from festival sponsors.  Finalists will be chosen from two separate categories: Features and Shorts. Five features and twenty shorts will be selected as finalists, and their films will be showcased in 4K over the two day festival.

Deadline for submissions is November 9th, and participants must submit in 4K with the following formats: DCP, ProRes 422/444, and DNxHD.  In addition, films under 15 minutes can be submitted using REDs FTP server, which means you can take up until the last minute to lock in your best print.  However, films over 15 minutes need to be submitted on a USB 3.0 external hard drive.  Additionally, RED requests that all submissions include a digital press kit (see submission form for details and format requirements).   Finalists will be notified on November 16, 2012 that their films will be featured at the Festival on December 4-5.

There’s not really a lot of time to get together a prize winning project, especially one shot on a RED camera, but if you’ve already got one in the can, or are deep enough into your production, this could be a viable option to showcase your film and get some buzz going.  If I knew anyone who had a RED, I’d be throwing one together anyway because it’s free to enter.  Then again, thanks to REDs recent closeout sale on up to 70 Scarlets, there’s bound to be a bunch out there eager to put their new toy to the test.  Now sure, there’s the old complaint that you have to have money to make money and how can you win a RED camera contest if you have to have film shot on a RED camera … but there’s always a fast RED rental, which would allow users to hit the ground running.  But with time so short, those who chose to go that route would be well served to rely on an experienced DP so you’re not throwing good money after bad.

To submit, email your SHOT ON RED Film Festival submission form to shotonredfestival@red.com.  For more information, head over to the SHOT ON RED Website here.
