If you’ve ever been to a comic convention in the 1990s, then you probably remember coming across that one booth where some shady guy was selling a bootleg copy of what he said was a long lost Fantastic Four film. I bought one of those and after watching it I remember thinking there was a reason it was never released.
In fact, I was wrong, because the film was never intended to be released as it just needed to be produced so the option rights to the property wouldn’t revert back to Marvel. Just before the rights were set to expire German producer Bernd Eichinger made an agreement with legendary B-movie producer/director Roger Corman to make a film for about $1 million.
To get a sense at how bad this film is, why not take a gander at the film’s trailer?
A documentary called Doomed! The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s The Fantastic Four directed by Marty Langford who interviewed Corman, as well as the rest of the cast and crew, to detail the production of the film. I’ve been eagerly awaiting an announcement for it’s release and we’ve finally received a date. The film will arrive later this year on VOD, as well as other digital services on October 11, followed by a DVD release on December 20, 2016. Check out the trailer for the documentary below.
Here’s what Uncork’d Entertainment president Keith Leopard said about the film (via /Film):
“The average moviegoer doesn’t know that, ten years before releasing Tim Story’s version, Roger Corman was asked to produce a Fantastic Four movie. Unbeknownst to cast and crew, the film was never going to be released though – and for a variety of reasons. Doomed! is such a compelling documentary – and not just for comic book movies but anyone intrigued by the ins and outs of Hollywood and business. In short, it’s a Fantastic movie.”
What really makes this documentary fascinating is that not only was it parodied in Arrested Development, but Fantastic Four was again rushed into production with Josh Trank’s reboot of the film series last year, so 20th Century Fox wouldn’t lose the rights… showing you how short a memory Hollywood has.
While the film has never been officially released it doesn’t mean you can’t get your hands on it. In fact, for those of you who are curious, you can watch it right now on YouTube here.
