How far we’ve come: Not only are we at 256GB SD cards, but now we have the same size cards in microSD thanks to Samsung, proving you can go large, and small, at the same time. And these cards are great for 4K camera acquisition. We’ve come a long way from the 256MB SD memory cards I’m staring at right now, as I’m writing this.
“With the upward trend of consumers using high-performance, high-capacity mobile devices, our new, V-NAND-based 256GB microSD card solution allows us to deliver the memory card consumers have been craving. Our EVO Plus 256GB microSD card, will provide consumers with large capacity, and high read and write speeds. We are excited to offer our customers convenient and seamless multimedia experiences when they access, store and share all of the content they create and capture.” – Un-Soo Kim, Senior Vice President of Brand Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics
Driven by 4K video with small action cameras like the GoPro, Samsung has been working to stay on the cutting edge, and have crafted a tiny V-NAND based microSD that can store up to 12 hours of ultra high definition 4K video (33 hours at full HD), and over 55,000 images on a single 256GB card.
The UHS-1 Class 10 EVO+ card is compatible to U3 and can write at speeds up to 90MB/S and read to 95 MB/S. Holy cow. It seems like only yesterday that SanDisk announced a 128GB microSD (back in early 2014), and now that storage capability has doubled.
As if that wasn’t enough, knowing that the cards are going to be popular with action camera photographers, SanDisk has taken the added step of making them Waterproof to IPX7 standards, which will provide protection from incidental exposure of water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. Plus, it’s also Temperature-proof, X-ray-proof, and Magnetic-proof. Operating temperatures for the EVO+ microSD card rate between -25°C to 85°C (-13°F to 185°F), non-operating temperatures of -40°C to 85°C (-40°F to 185°F).

Samsung reached this rating through internal tests where they were able to achieve an average actual data store capacity of over 93.1% of its rated capacity, testing with resolution sizes that included:
- 4032×3024 12MP
- 3840×2160 (30 fps) 4K UHD
- 1920×1080 Full HD (30fps)
- 1280×720 HD
- Average file size : 10.7MB
But the massive card isn’t cheap, as Samsung has listed the 256GB EVO Plus microSD for a retail price of $249.99. But and will be available in 50 countries, including the USA, Europe, China, and other regions starting in June 2016. That also means that the 128GB models will drop in price! I love the rapid development pace of technology!
