Sense8 season one was an uneven but thrilling series. The Wachowskis along with Michael J. Straczynski created a series that tried to go off and do something new without any inhibitions, and for that we got some really interesting scenes.
Netflix took its time to renew the show, and the creators have been hard at work on the new season. For the fast few days we’ve heard there will be a Christmas special for the series and it turns out that will indeed be the case. The streaming service has announced Sense8: A Christmas Special will premiere on Netflix on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 12:01 AM Pacific time. Here is the synopsis for the special:
“The journey continues as these eight singular hearts and minds weave in and out of each other’s lives finding deeper connections, learning darker, more desperate secrets about one another and struggling to identify with more than just oneself.”
After the Christmas special, the series’ second season will premiere five months later in May 2017. I can’t help but wonder if this is going to be a new norm for higher profile television series. While Doctor Who has been doing specials around the holidays for a while, Netflix seems to be jumping on to that bandwagon with Marco Polo: One Hundred Eyes and now Sense8.
Premium television series seem to be taking longer and longer between seasons these days. For example, the recently wrapped Westworld won’t be back until at least 2018, so these specials are a great way to keep the momentum going, although I suspect that particular HBO series won’t have a special — and neither will Game of Thrones.
Netflix has also released a few images from the upcoming season of Sense8, which you can see in the gallery below:
I am looking forward Sense8’s second season, since the first season was all setup for the characters, how there power works, and introducing the history and story elements. From here on out we should be treated to the story proper, and more of what is going on.
Sense8 season two will premiere on May 5, 2017 at 12:01 AM Pacific time on Netflix. Here’s the official synopsis:
Picking up where season one left off, Capheus (Toby Onwumere), Kala (Tina Desai), Lito (Miguel Angel Silvestre), Nomi (Jamie Clayton), Riley (Tuppence Middleton), Sun (Doona Bae), Will (Brian J. Wright) and Wolfgang (Max Riemelt) come together both physically and mentally, plunged into the middle of each other’s tragedies and triumphs. On the run from Whispers (Terrence Mann), and forced to question their very identity, it’s a matter of survival as the Sensates must find a way to live with, understand and protect one another against all odds.
