After becoming a smash hit and a bonafide cultural phenomenon back in mid-July, Stranger Things’ creators, directors, writers and showrunners the Duffer Brothers began discussing their plans for season 2. And Netflix has finally and officially ordered a season 2 for 2017, and released this video teaser with the titles of the episodes. Instead of 8 episodes, there will be 9 next season, which takes place one year after season 1, in the fall of 1984.
Here’s that complete list of episode names for the upcoming season:
- The Boy Who Came Back to Life
- The Pumpkin Patch
- The Palace
- The Storm
- The Pollywog
- The Secret Cabin
- The Brain
- The Lost Brother
That list of episodes pretty much doesn’t tell us much about the upcoming season other than the fact that the Duffer Brothers have already broken the season down. There are some possible hints as to what we’ll see in the second season with the first thought that crossed my mind was Madmax may refer to Hooper. In the Mad Max films, an ex-police officer loses his family and travels a wasteland so maybe he isn’t sheriff anymore. Maybe instead of a desert wasteland he travels through Upside Down.
I assume that The Lost Brother and The Boy Who Came Back to Life will once again refer to Will Byers as he was shown to be still affected by his trip to the other side but I hope that he doesn’t go missing again. I doubt the Duffer Brothers would rehash that same plotline for a second season.
The Pollywog is another interesting title since it could refer to a polliwog which is a tadpole. We saw Will cough out a slug in the season finale so that could be what they call it. Another possible definition (according to Urban Dictionary) is that a pollywog is “a boy who grows up without a father and must raise himself to be a man” and also applies to Will Byers.
A final assumption I’ll make about the upcoming season is because that the end of the season two announcement trailer says “In the fall of 1984… the adventure continues” while episode three is titled The Pumpkin Patch my best guess is that this season will take place just before Hallowe’en. A lot of 80s films take place around special holidays like that (E.T. The Extra Terrestrial also took place around Hallowe’en) and the Duffer Brothers even set season one before Christmas. Sounds like they’re continuing that tradition.
There are so many unanswered questions from season one and I’m very curious what Eleven has been up to this entire time. Season Two of Stranger Things will premiere sometime in 2017.
