I love me some Star Wars! Disney buying Lucasfilm has been one of the best things to ever happen to the property, since they not only revived it with a new trilogy, but added in anthology-style films, as well. Both Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Star Wars: The Force Awakens were arguably much better received than the prequel trilogy, so many fans are excited about what’s coming next — and it seems like Star Wars News Net got the scoop!
Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan Solo Film
According to their sources, the next Anthology film could be a single Obi-Wan film starring Ewan McGregor. Interestingly enough, the article goes out of their way to point out they are planning just one film, and there are absolutely no plans for a second movie starring McGregor. Lucasfilm may have already tapped Rogue One director Gareth Edwards to direct the film.
My own hunch is that we may see more than just McGregor return, but that both Yoda, and maybe even Liam Neeson’s ghost Qui-Gon Jinn could show up. I seriously doubt the whole movie would take place on Tatooine, so my best guess is that something very important needs to happen to draw him away from the planet.
When will we hear an announcement for this movie? Possibly as soon as this year at Celebration Orlando, starting April 13.
Other Anthology Films
Two other movies may be in the works. One is a Boba Fett film, which is apparently an ensemble film of bounty hunters on an adventure not unlike Rogue One, but still brings up the question of whether Temuera Morrison will play the role or not. [Editor’s note: Joe Johnston needs to direct a Boba Fett film; he created the famed bounty hunter, after all.]
The second film is described as young-adult targeted movie with a tragic love story. I think fans will have a knee-jerk reaction to this since the last time they did something that sounds similar it was called the prequel trilogy.
The Television Series
One of the crazier things that have come out of this news is that Lucasfilm plans on deliberately starving the market of Star Wars films a few years after the sequel trilogy wraps up. They’re worried about over-saturating the property, which is a legitimate concern. That doesn’t mean there won’t be any more Star Wars, however, as attention will then go to creating new television shows — plural. Unlike Rebels or Clone Wars, these shows may not fill in the gaps, but rather continue the stories after the sequel trilogy. They also note that a lot of practical stuff from the sequels is going into storage, which could be reused for a live-action show.
May The Fourth Trilogy Be With You
C’mon, even if they’re putting the film franchise to sleep for a while, you knew there would be another trilogy coming down the pipeline! When both the prequel and sequel trilogies were announced, they were HUGE news items, and it seems that Disney and Lucasfilm want the same fanfare for Episode X to XII. They apparently see each trilogy as a generational continuation, so my guess is the earliest we’ll see another trilogy is 2025, which is ten years after The Force Awakens premiered. They could also wait until ten years after 2019’s Episode IX, which means no new Star Wars saga until 2029.
