The DC Extended Universe is still full steam ahead with Wonder Woman next summer, and Justice League following soon after in the fall. While we know that Cyborg, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Batman, Aquaman, and Superman will make up the Justice League a new report says we can expect another character to show up.
Possible spoilers for Justice League to follow!
Umberto Gonzales recently published an article on TheWrap about the upcoming film and revealed the following intriguing tidbit about Justice League:
“A member of the Green Lantern Corps. Will be seen in Justice League in a key sequence.”
This goes back to the earliest days of marketing for the film, where director Zack Snyder was using the phrase “Unite the seven” to promote it. So far we’ve only been introduced to six of the seven members of the League, but it was always possible they were reserving the Green Lantern for the second Justice League movie.
The big question is which Green Lantern will they be encountering? There have been a few Green Lanterns of Space Sector 2814, so it may not be Hal Jordan that encounters the team, and it is equally as likely to be John Stewart. While those are the two most likely characters another possibility is that they may want to add another woman to the team so it could even be Jessica Cruz that they meet.
I should note that the rumor is that a member of the Green Lantern Corps. will be part of the film but not necessarily joining the team which means it could be anyone. It might even be Abin Sur which could kick off an origin film for the upcoming Green Lantern Corps.
But Green Lantern won’t be the only space based presence showing up. TheWrap is also claiming that, despite Steppenwolf having been revealed to be the antagonist of Justice League, Darkseid has a role to play:
“Darkseid’s presence will loom large in Justice League as the film’s prologue introduces the New God while ancient Amazonians, Atlanteans, and pre-historic humans fight him off Earth.”
We know that three Mother Boxes will be in the hands of Amazonians, Atlanteans, and humans. These are the McGuffins that the Justice League try to locate.
What is less clear is that even though the character will have a part to play in the beginning of the film what does that mean for the end of the movie? It could be Darkseid will be the “final boss,” in the same way that Doomsday was in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, or they could be holding that character in reserve until the Justice League sequel. My bet is on the latter and I suspect this is the DCEU’s version of what Marvel is doing with Avengers: Infinity War.
Justice League will premiere in theaters on November 17, 2017, while Wonder Woman debuts June 2, 2017. Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.
