We’ve been hearing for awhile now that Peter Jackson has been jonsin’ to direct an episode Doctor Who. He’s such a Whovian, that he cast the Seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, in the roll of the wizard Radagast for The Hobbit trilogy. And now it looks like he’s actually going to get his wish, as Peter Capaldi showed up at his house this weekend to make it hilariously official.
Jackson kinda announced the Doctor Who news in a funny video post on his official Facebook page, where he’s sitting at the kitchen table with his daughter, polishing his four Oscars. In the video, Jackson goes on a tongue and cheek diatribe about how Who head Producer and lead writer, Steven Moffat is hit and miss with his scripts, when Capaldi appears in the background and announces himself as “The Doctor.” Naturally, Jackson asks, “Who?” and Capaldi says, “exactly.”
The 12th Doctor when goes on about being sent by Moffat to deliver something for Jackson’s signature and then having to take it back to Moffat at the BBC. This is, in essence, Jackson’s contract to direct. The best part about it is that Jackson is totally non challant about the whole thing, almost like he doesn’t care. Then the Doctor gets chased off by a Dalek (Jackson wants to do an episode with his favorite Who monster), while Jackson and his daughter gleefully head off to watch an episode of The Walking Dead.
You can’t get more clear that Jackson is going to direct an episode of Doctor Who Series 10 than that, and since we’re already hearing that a shortened series 10 of Doctor Who is going to be consisting of feature length specials, rather than episodes seems to make sense now, with Jackson directing. This is largely due to Moffat’s other commitment … Sherlock, which comes around beginning this Christmas.
There’s also a hint that the Doctor Who production may go down under to New Zealand to shoot, but in the video the Doctor says that Moffat wants Jackson to come to Cardiff Studios to shoot it. But if it’s a feature length episode, what couldn’t be more awesome than a “visit New Zealand” shot with the TARDIS in the mountains where the Fellowship once walked?
“If I had to start tomorrow, I would say no, because I definitely would appreciate a break to clear my head and get my little New Zealand stories done, which is where my passion and my heart is heading now. But ask me in two or three years, and I’d probably say yes. It would be hard to see another filmmaker go into this world, because I certainly have an emotional ownership of it.” – Peter Jackson, MoviePilot last January
Speaking of which, there’s another hint in the video which isn’t Who-related. Jackson seems to have a copy of J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Silmarillion his table. Is he hinting (or more like threatening) that he wants to direct Tolkein’s swan song? If so, he’s really going to have convince Tolkein’s son, Christopher, who has been emphatic about the novel never being made into a movie, since The Hobbit trilogy happened. But there it is, sitting on his desk, knowing that hard core Tolkein fans and Whovians a like would pick up on it.
But one step at a time. It looks like we have to look forward to Jackson finally getting his wish to direct Doctor Who, and it looks like he’s going to do a story about Daleks!
